ABA FAQ

Understanding what ABA therapy is, why it is used, how it is used, and the reasons you might need it can be confusing. Behavioral Services in general are often confusing to first time clients. We have compiled a list of questions along with resources to help you better understand ABA and how Legacy uses it.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS ABA?

ABA is based on the science of behavior and learning. It is often used to decrease dangerous or disruptive behaviors and teach important skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. ABA therapy can be implemented to teach and improve communication skills, social skills, motor abilities, leisure and play skills, and adaptive skills such as toileting, dressing, and feeding.

IS ABA THERAPY ONLY FOR AUTISM?

ABA can be effective for individuals with a variety of diagnoses. ABA techniques help teach individuals to use positive behaviors (such as communication) instead of dangerous or disruptive behaviors.

WHAT IS A BCBA?

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a practitioner who conducts assessments to evaluate an individual's needs and designs a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to that individual. The BCBA supervises the behavior technicians who work one-on-one with individuals receiving treatment. The BCBA is responsible for teaching behavior technicians, parents, and caregivers how to implement the programs in the treatment plan to ensure proper treatment.

DOES INSURANCE COVER ABA?

Legacy Behavioral Services currently accepts Colorado Medicaid. Colorado Medicaid currently covers pediatric behavioral therapy. All behavioral therapy must be authorized before treatment begins. Your child's pediatrician will be able to tell you if their diagnosis or symptoms make behavioral therapy medically necessary.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR FUNCTIONS OF BEHAVIOR?
